Jennifer Todd - Mary Miller Backs Education Changes That Endanger Critical Jobs in IL-15

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Jennifer Todd, Democratic candidate for Congress in Illinois’ 15th District, slammed Congresswoman Mary Miller today for backing changes to federal education policy that threaten careers in nursing, social work, school leadership, and other essential professions. Many of these positions are also mandatory reporters, legally required to report suspected abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable person to the authorities.

“This is about the people who keep our hospitals running, our schools staffed, and our families cared for,” Todd said. “The Department of Education is redefining careers like nursing, social work, school principals, psychologists, and speech-language pathologists as ‘non-professional degrees,’ limiting access to financial aid and making it harder for new professionals to train. That means fewer qualified people in roles our communities rely on — and families in IL-15 will feel it first.”

Todd emphasized that these changes were made possible by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which Mary Miller proudly voted for and celebrated. “Mary Miller cheered on a law that will leave seniors, veterans, families, and our workforce behind,” Todd said.

Illinois is already facing a critical nursing shortage, projected to reach nearly 15,000 in 2025. Combined with skyrocketing insurance premiums, expiring ACA subsidies, and rising costs for everyday necessities, the impact on rural communities will be devastating. Over 70% of these affected careers are held by women, underscoring the disproportionate burden on families.

“As a nurse and a mom, I know how vital these professions are. When pathways into these careers are blocked, rural hospitals and schools suffer first, insurance premiums climb faster, and our communities struggle to fill the roles that keep us safe and healthy,” Todd said.

Jennifer Todd is running to defeat Mary Miller and restore common-sense leadership that prioritizes healthcare, education, and support services for the people of IL-15. “We must act now to protect these careers and ensure voters know the truth about the law Mary Miller cheered on,” Todd added.
