PRESS RELEASE
A SIGN OF THE TIMES
“One of my super volunteers, Lori Neihart, told me an incredibly sad story that really speaks to the times we are living in and why Illinois needs a leader that listens and cares,” said Jennifer Todd.
Lori recounted her story, “Last month I was at the Casey’s in Wapella and the employee was struggling because someone used their prized collection of JFK half dollars to fill up their tank. They are substantial coins and the drawer wouldn’t close on the register.”
Todd continued, “The idea that someone had to use their coin collection to pay for gas is not acceptable. When I am elected I will help get the economy back on track and help bring down the crazy prices of gas, food, housing and healthcare.”
Lori did not want the customer’s plight to go unmarked, and she felt bad for the cashier struggling to close the cash drawer. She said, “I offered to buy the half dollars to help out. These 60 half dollars became the inspiration for my sign for Jennifer Todd’s campaign for Congress. I wanted to use change to spell change on my sign and these coins would be perfect to help fulfill my vision. After all, JFK was an underdog too, like Jennifer.”
She explained, “I spent a few hours at the library to bring it all together with a hot glue gun and some scrappy determination. Another creative touch on the sign, I used multi colored bandaids to write the candidates name because Todd is a registered nurse for more than 30 years running for office for the first time. When I heard her message, I decided to volunteer for a campaign for the first time.”
“I’m not sure if it’s the struggle of folks that makes this a story or how democracy depends on the efforts of ordinary individuals or something else. I just keep being told this is a story to share,” said Lori.
Lori Neihart with CHANGE signJennifer Todd, a second-generation nurse, mom, daughter of a veteran, raised in a union household, won the Democratic nomination for Congress in the 15th Congressional District. Her former Democratic primary opponents have subsequently joined together in support of her campaign.
